COVID-19 is a global pandemic that has quickly spread around the world, and has already infected over 23 million Americans and killed almost 500,000 people in the United States. By the end of 2020, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) released both Moderna’s and Pfizer’s/BioNTech’s mRNA COVID-19 vaccines under an Emergency Use Authorization (EUA) with the goal of stopping the pandemic.
As of February 2021, the United States has administered over 58 million COVID-19 vaccines, while global disease epidemiologists state that 70% to 80% of the population will still need to get the COVID-19 vaccine in order to control the COVID-19 global pandemic. COVID-19 vaccine beliefs are varied among Americans, and it is important to define to the American public what exactly is in the COVID-19 vaccine and how it was developed.
Despite the rigorous vaccine approval process, a distrust in the American government, the spread of misinformation, and ‘fake news’ have led many Americans to be skeptical of the COVID-19 vaccine, which has major implications for public health.
